"FREE SPEECH AND EQUAL PROTECTION"
In “Franklin Graham: Putin is better on gay issues than Obama” (JournalNow, March 19), the Rev. Franklin Graham first praises Russian President Vladmir Putin for “protecting children” from the “gay agenda.” Graham then exalts Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime because it “at least has a constitution guaranteeing equal protection of citizens.” While Graham’s assertion that Assad feels bound to any overarching laws or basic human rights seems horrifyingly opaque, Graham does recognize our Constitution’s vital role in protecting minorities and their basic rights from the unchecked tyranny of the majority.
Unfortunately, Graham fails to catch the paradox. A constitution is not merely a document with words, but it represents a society’s commitment to overarching values and human rights. These constitutional values – such as equal protection under the law, or freedom of speech – do not apply only to minority Christian groups or speech that Graham finds morally acceptable.
By using the words “propaganda” and “protecting children” from an insidious-sounding “gay agenda,” Putin and Graham attempt to conceal the Russian law’s primary effect – to stifle free speech, a right enshrined in our Constitution that allows Graham to criticize the president and then compliment Assad and Putin in the same speech. While Graham may view the gay rights movement as immoral or detrimental to society, criminalizing a minority group’s free speech is neither American nor Christian.
Graham’s father, the famous evangelist Billy Graham, has said he regretted ever getting involved in politics. Graham would be wise to follow his father’s advice.
